I live near this splendid Benedictine Abbey, in Quebec. During the fall, the colours are extraordinary.
Please accept my apologies for not posting frequently. I have moved to a new apartment, but my floors are covered with boxes containing books. This situation will end soon. I have hired an ébéniste who will build bookcases on each side of a fireplace and above my desk. He will also provide more adequate storage. I have difficulty working in the middle of this “mess.”
Moving turned out to be more exhausting than I anticipated.
I am currently finishing a post on immigration in the United States. Originally, only free white persons could be given citizenship. Yet, the United States became the world’s foremost refuge, which may not last if deportations continue and DACA is rescinded.

It’s a gorgeous area – I miss the townships terribly.

The Townships are a truly beautiful area of Quebec. It has lakes and mountains, Mount Orford in particular. I enjoy living in an area where one may speak French or English. In this respect, the Townships are friendly and the people very polite. Je suppose que vous parlez français. Thank you for writing.:-)

Oui je suis un francophone but I live in the US for most of life so English is the default now.

This is where I was born and raised, until adolescence. I then returned to study at Marianopolis College, in Montreal, and to work as a hostess at the 1967 Montreal World Exhibition. The Eastern Townships has beautiful scenery. I love its lakes and hills. I must read Earth and High Heaven. I hope you are well Gallivanta. Best, Micheline

Gallivanta, I think you would enjoy the Eastern Towships. They were settled by British Empire Loyalists. They opened factories and businesses, which attracted unemployed French Canadians and the Irish, at the time of the famine. The Townships (l’Estrie) are to the south east of Montreal, very near the United States. I’ve moved to a smaller apartment. It’s the last apartment and it has only one bedroom, but it is spacious. Yes, I live a short drive away from Magog and Saint-Benoît-du-Lac. My father befriended the Monks of Saint-Benoît-du-Lac in the early 1950s. We then shared a summer house with Belgian friends, a five-minute drive from Saint-Benoît, at Austin. During the last years of his life, my father and I attended Mass at Saint-Benoît on Sunday. He remained close to the monks until shortly before his death and several were at the funeral home when he died. Attending Mass or one of the Hours (Vespers) at Saint-Benoît is an extraordinary experience. The choir is exceptional and at least one of the monks is a virtuoso organist. Thank you for writing.
