Illness, Marc-André Hamelin, Sappho, sharing

Sappho par Charles Menguin, 1877

Dear friends,

I have yet to recover from pericarditis. It was diagnosed on 4 October 2021. Other problems were diagnosed later: an inflammation of the rib cage muscles and broken ribs. However, the initial diagnosis remains valid. It is pericarditis, and it is harrowing. I have undergone several tests, but I cannot say that I have been treated. Life in Magog is better than life in Sherbrooke. I have a friend who looks after me and is good company. If I can use my left arm – I am left-handed – we sit at the dining table and work at our computers. I can barely use my left hand. I am now in Sherbrooke looking after domestic matters. The co-owners of this building were told to get rid of their thirty-year-old whirlpool tubs because they could leak. I was not prepared for this.

Life goes on despite the pain. Canada is spending billions on its healthcare programme. I could choose my doctor in Canadian provinces other than Quebec, but one is lucky to have a doctor in Quebec. It could be that, by now, matters have also changed in the rest of Canada. At any rate, some people are going to private doctors. It may be my only recourse, which should not be the case.

Best regards to everyone. 💕

Frédéric Chopin, Humour, Marc-André Hamelin, Opus 64 No 1, Quebec pianist, The Minute Waltz

An Encore: The “Minute Waltz”

Marc-André Hamelin (b. 1961) is a Canadian virtuoso pianist and a composer, born and raised in Montreal, Quebec. No piece is too difficult for him. He has often praised the nun who taught him how to play the piano. His father should also be praised.

He is a graduate of L’École Vincent-d’Indy, in Montreal, and then studied at Temple University in Philadelphia.

He lives in Boston, Massachusetts, a fine location, with his second wife, Katie Fuller, a pianist and WGBH classical music broadcaster.

I need not tell you that Marc-André has a sense of humour.

The Minute Waltz is Frédéric Chopin’s Op 64, No 1.

Love to everyone 💕

a deal, George Gershwin, John Boehner, Marc-André Hamelin, President Barack Obama

I think We have a deal

It appears the debt ceiling will be raised.  There is a deal.  No one knows the details of this deal, except Washington, but a default has been avoided.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-24558615

Yet, I am afraid.  I heard Mr Boehner, courtesy of the BBC.  He mentioned the Affordable Care Act, but called it what it should no longer be called:  Obamacare.   The name of the programme is the Patient Protection Affordable Care Act, or ACA, and it is a long-awaited health-insurance plan.

Warren Buffet: “It would be ‘asinine’ if US defaults.”

I listened to Warren Buffet.  He stated that the “house” would no longer use a government shutdown to negotiate a rise in the debt ceiling.

The Deal

All I know about the deal is that, although it will “pass,” it is a short-term arrangement.  I expect therefore that we will soon be watching a replay of the drama that is currently ending.  When “negotiations” resume, there may not be a government shutdown, but I do not think extremist Republicans will ever want to fund the Affordable Care Act.  As for the rich, they will continue to oppose paying their fair share of taxes.

The Raises

Here is the history of the United States debt ceiling, from Wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_United_States_debt_ceiling

US government indebtedness has been the norm in United States financial history, as well of most Western European and North American countries, for the past 200 years.

  • The US has been in debt every year except for 1835.
  • Debts incurred during the American Revolutionary War and under the Articles of Confederation led to the first yearly report on the amount of the debt ($75,463,476.52 on January 1, 1791).
  • Every President since Herbert Hoover has added to the national debt expressed in absolute dollars. The debt ceiling has been raised 74 times since March 1962,including 18 times under Ronald Reagan, eight times under Bill Clinton, seven times under George W. Bush, and five times under Barack Obama.

Conclusion

This is a brief post.  I will end it by saying that I am delighted the crisis is over.  We can breathe again.  However, we have now seen an episode of  obstructionism: a government shutdown.  I just hope President Obama will not be blamed.  That would be scapegoating.   Who knows, President Obama may have gained supporters.

The News are mostly bad.  As a result, I really do suspect that the students are being set up, which is unacceptable.  The students have acted like a bunch of sheep.

I have written of few tweets to point out to students that they were mere puppets.  The fines they have to pay will exceed the raise in tuition fees.  Moreover, the price of trying to control the demonstrators is very heavy.  People need protection.

It seems the movement is spreading to the US, which points to professional malfeasance.
