Syria Refugees 20151212

Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard greets a newly-arrived Syrian refugees at Montreal’s Pierre Elliot Trudeau international airport, on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Paul Chiasson

Syrian Refugees: Special Treatment

Not all refugees arriving in Canada have received the same welcome as the Syrians refugees who arrived beginning on Friday. If I could roll back history, newcomers would be spared lining up to receive their Social Insurance Number (called SIN) and their Health Insurance card. These are essential documents, but usually they are not readily available. One has to stand in line.

Our first group of Syrian refugees have been treated like VIPs (Very Important Persons). But all immigrants to Canada are very important persons. However, at the moment, there are individuals who would close the door to their country on Muslims as if all Muslims were terrorists.

Supplying official documents

I’m not involved personally in the welcoming process, but it would be my opinion that while welcoming refugees, Canada must be prudent, which is necessary. Civil servants (employees of the government), and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have been working long hours. They therefore know who has arrived. Canada cannot presume that its refugees are dangerous, but it has to make sure its refugees and immigrants are peace-loving and law-abiding individuals. Four weeks ago, Paris was attacked.

Moreover, Canada must reassure its Muslim community. Many Muslins have been in Canada for a long time and are excellent citizens. They are above suspicion. Given such facts, we cannot and should not close our doors on Syrian refugees, but we have to be reasonably careful. That is the normal procedure.

Details

I should point out that many refugees are privately-sponsored. In this respect, Canada’s Armenian community has been very generous and have inspired other Canadians. Moreover, we have a younger government. Our recently-elected Prime Minister has a great deal of energy and he is making Canadians feel optimistic. Our refugees are arriving during a period of enthusiasm. I believe those who were greeted by Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard were addressed in Arabic. Dr Couillard spent four years in Saudi Arabia. He may not be fluent anymore but he knows Arabic.

Besides, there is a peace-making tradition dating back to Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, if not earlier. We are also a multicultural society living in a harsh climate. Margaret Atwood wrote a lovely book of poems, the Journals of Susanna Moodie (1970), in which she describes the bitter disappointment of immigrants recruited in Britain. They were told that they would be part of the upper classes in their new country, but found themselves walking in the mud.

A_terrible_record_John_Johnson_political_&_satirical_cropped

Political cartoon from the 1880s: “In forty years I have lost, through the operation of no natural law, more than Three Million of my Sons and Daughters, and they, the Young and the Strong, leaving behind the Old and Infirm to weep and to die. Where is this to end?

My father’s great-grandmother came to Canada during the potato famine that devastated Ireland in the late 19th century. Many of Canada’s Irish immigrants arrived in Montreal. They were suffering from various contagious diseases but were nevertheless allowed off the boats and treated. They needed care and the population of Montreal rose to the challenge. These immigrants have become good Canadians.

Stop selling weapons to terrorists

To return to our Syrian refugees, another factor should be examined. Who is selling weapons to warring factions in the Middle East?  The people who attacked Paris used Kalashnikovs. Where did they get these weapons and the bullets that killed 130 innocent people? Extremists are not easily discouraged. Selling weapons to any of them does not seem judicious. On the contrary, it seems somewhat reckless.

I realize that the War Industry is particularly lucrative. It transforms the rich into billionaires, but nations that make weapons and sell them to terrorist organizations may be complicit in genocides and may force a large number of people to leave their country. Is this an acceptable way of making a profit?

Ted Cruz on Guns

Presidential hopeful Ted Cruz says Americans need their guns.

“ Ted Cruz offered an impassioned defense of gun rights in the wake of the San Bernardino terrorist attack on Friday, telling a crowd at an Iowa gun range, you don’t stop bad guys by taking away our guns, you stop bad guys by using our guns.” (my bold characters)
(Ted Cruz)

“The Second Amendment is about something very fundamental” Cruz said. “It’s about the God-given right of every single one of us to protect our home, our families and our lives.” (my bold characters)
(Ted Cruz)

http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2016-election/ted-cruz-tout-second-amendment-support-iowa-gun-range-n474431

The 2nd amendment, quoted below, fell into obsolescence when militias were formed.

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

One cannot shoot if one does not have a gun. There is a sense in which the National Rifle Association played a role in the San Bernardino massacre.

Who is selling weapons to Isis and Syrian rebels?

There can be no doubt that big nations are empowering Isis. So, “[w]here is this to end?” (See the image above.)

It begins with an attack; it is followed by a counter-attack (retaliation) and it may continue indefinitely, if weapons are available.

With kindest regards to everyone. ♥

Turning the other cheek

Retaliation

Once again, we are witnesses to retaliation.

http://www.cnn.com/2015/12/03/world/russia-turkey-syria-warplane-tensions/index.html

Turkey has shot down a Russian fighter jet so Russian President Vladimir Putin, not a choirboy, is therefore saying that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will regret “for a long time” downing the Russian fighter plane. It was flying in Turkey’s airspace.

Having a “right” to…

Erdoğan will not apologize. He had a “right” to shoot down this Russian fighter jet because it was flying in Turkey’s airspace.

According to this logic, if a child, a brother, (1) has hurt his sister (2) the day before, the sister (2) has the right to hurt her brother (1) the following day. I believe that if a responsible parent sees his or her children fighting, the sister (2) will not be allowed to hurt her brother (1) and that both will be told they are acting irresponsibly. If the sister (2) has hurt her brother, both might be sent to their respective rooms to “think.”

No one has the “right” to hurt another person willfully. As for revenge, it is immature behaviour. One apologizes and, if losses were incurred, reasonable compensation may be necessary.

But it could be that I am reading a different page, or a different book.

With respect to pilots, prudence was advisable. It is safer for pilots not to enter another country’s airspace if doing so is a violation or if there is enmity between their nation and the one whose airspace they have foolishly penetrated. There were two pilots. One man died, but the other was rescued. However, none of this was appropriate.

How can anyone expect Isis to end the atrocities perpetrated against the people of Paris and against inhabitants of the Middle East, if Russian President Vladimir Putin allows Russian pilots to fly in Turkey’s airspace and President Erdoğan orders the Turkish military to shoot the plane down?

Therefore, the leaders themselves are showing Isis that it is acceptable to retaliate every time a drone attack occurs. In other words, They are showing Isis that if Syria is bombed, it should dig in its heels by attacking countries outside Syria, not to mention Syrians themselves who may fall into the hands of terrorists.

More heads will fall, more people will be burned alive or locked into cages that will be lowered into water. Isis will also capture women and turn them into sex slaves, not to mention other ignominies.

Worst of all, Syrians will continue to pour out of their country.

The West has long meddled in the affairs of the Middle East. What comes to mind immediately are George W Bush’s wars, the 2000s. But, let us not forget the Crusades nor colonialism.

In fact, let us not forget that harm done to Islam by the West cannot justify Isis’ barbaric behaviour?  It’s retaliation gone astray and untargeted. Yet, can strikes be targeted and just who should strike?

Jesus of Nazareth, a Jew who lived in occupied Palestine, did not leave a manuscript. However, he is reported to have said: “Turn the other cheek.” It was a metaphor and cannot be read or interpreted literally. Yet, in the context of current events, it makes sense. Or could it be that I am once again reading a different page and, perhaps, the wrong book?

My kindest regards to everyone. ♥

Muath al-Kasasbeh

My colleagues at WordPress have posted articles and pictures about this latest crime, but there cannot be enough voices protesting. So I protest!

At the centre of the above-featured photograph, we see Jordanian Muath al-Kasasbeh‘s father living the worst of nightmares. His son, 26, is inside a cage being burned alive. Lieutenant Muath al-Kasasbeh was a pilot with the Royal Jordanian Air Force, captured by ISIS.

Kenji Gotō

Kenji Gotō, 47, was decapitated on 31 January 2015. He was attempting to save Haruna Yukawa, 42. Both were captured by ISIS. The Japanese are calling Kenji Gotō‘s murder, their 9/11. They stand in disbelief, as did the French and the survivors of the staff of the Charlie Hebdo, twelve died on January 7. The surviving hostages of the Vincennes kosher Hyper Cacher also stood in disbelief. Five Jewish men were killed on 9 January 2015.

Why not a bullet to the back of the head?

“Why not a bullet to the back of the head, Ayman al-Zawahiri helpfully suggested from his hideout in the mountains along the Afghan-Pakistani border?”
George Packer, The New Yorker

Ayman al-Zawahiri, a surgeon, is the Emir of Al-Qaeda. Atrocities have gone so far that even he, Ayman al-Zawahiri, underlined the brutality of ISIS. Dogs “go for the jugular” and kill instantly. Could it be that dogs know better than so-called human beings? This is death by torture, as will be Raif Badawi‘s if he is flogged again.

King Abdullah II of Jordan

In the name of Allah
In the name of Christ

“King Abdullah of Jordan described ISIS today as a ‘criminal and misguided group which is not related in any shape or form to our great faith.’” (Daily Mail, UK)

King Abdullah is right.

God would not burn a man alive, no more than Jesus would lower a human being into boiling oil. Jihadi John was holding the knife used to behead Kenji Gotō; God wasn’t! Nor did God set the fire that burned alive an innocent Jordanian pilot. Finally, God will not hold the whip that may kill Raif Badawi.

If anyone is guilty of Apostasy, it’s ISIS

Mr Badawi has been accused of apostasy, an “abandonment of Islam.” Sorry, but let’s look in the appropriate direction. The humans who perpetrated these crimes, naming God, are committing apostasy. In Islam, apostasy

“is commonly defined as the conscious abandonment of Islam by a Muslim in word or through deed. It includes the act of converting to another religion (such as Christianity) by a person who was born in a Muslim family or who had previously accepted Islam.” (Apostasy, Wikipedia)

These are crimes against humanity meted out by cruel humans, so cruel that they kill by torture. No mercy is shown towards the victims. But more importantly, these are crimes against Allah. They are crimes committed by Muslims who have abandoned Islam. So just who should be accused of apostasy?

As King Abdullah II of Jordan stated, ISIS is: ‘a criminal and misguided group which is not related in any shape or form to our great faith.’ (Daily Mail, UK)

Jihadi John, a British national it seems, is insulting Islam. Muslims around the world are afraid they will be associated with terrorism. There’s been a change: so-called Muslims are killing Muslims. ISIS is an enemy-within.

Moaz or Muath al-Kasasbeh, who was burned alive on 3 February 2015, was a Muslim.

Meanwhile in North-America

Canada’s Foreign affairs minister, John Baird, resigned his post yesterday, February 3rd, 2015.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/what-john-baird-s-departure-means-for-stephen-harper-1.2943594

President Obama has condemned the murder of Lieutenant Muath al-Kasasbeh, but he has not resigned his functions as President of the United States.

Conclusion

How does one make sense of the atrocious beheading of Japanese Yaruna Yukawa and Kenji Gotō? Those are gratuitous crimes. And how does one make sense of Lt. Muath Kasasbeh’s barbaric death?

I do not want to suggest that the people of the Middle East cannot build a better road to their own future. They can. They may need a little help, but they can and they will, or…

Nor do I want to suggest that Arabian monarchs are not compassionate. We differ from culture to culture, but as I wrote in an earlier post, human nature is the same everywhere.

Fathers are fathers.

I offer my condolences to Lieutenant Kasasbeh’s father, mother, wife, and his children and to every member of Kenji Gotō‘s family and Haruna Yukawa’s.

As for Raif Badawi, I have to trust that King Salman of Saudi Arabia will free him. Your Highness, please show mercy towards Mr Badawi and help the world eradicate so-called Muslims who kill in the name of Allah.

Kings are fathers to their nation.
