Yesterday, my nephew François took me to see my brother Jean-Pierre. He is hospitalized in the very large building I showed in an earlier post.
When we arrived, a priest was giving him the Last Rites. The priest invited all of us to kiss him and leave him a message. No one knows how long he will live, but he is in a room for the dying.
My brother is very weak. He can barely lift his head from the pillow and he cannot sit in bed without the help of three persons, one for each arm and a person who rearranges his pillow.
We stayed with him the entire afternoon and the little group returned to the hospital in the evening. I stayed home. I don’t want to know how much we paid in parking fees, but if members of his family did not help my brother, he would require the services of at least one professional twenty-four hours a day. A nurse came in to give him morphine and she obviously kept an eye on us, but he wasn’t alone.
Good News
I have good news. Quebec doctors were becoming an aristocracy:
“On Wednesday, an independent report commissioned by Quebec’s Health and Welfare Commissioner found that physician salaries had doubled between 2005-15, while the hours doctors spent with patients declined.”

We, Quebec doctors, are asking that the salary increases granted to physicians be cancelled and that the resources of the system be better distributed for the good of the healthcare workers and to provide health services worthy to the people of Quebec, the letter posted on 26 February states

Dear Derrick, Death can be merciful. So we all hope this will end very soon. Family project # 1 is Jean-Pierre. The hospital is putting a little bed for one of us in his room. Jean-Pierre is accepting death, but he will not die alone. I can’t believe what Quebec doctors have done. They are not accepting an increase in salary. People could no longer find doctors. I settled for a public clinic where patients are seen by a supervised intern. When my intern left, he asked his supervisor to take me as a patient. His supervisor did. Thank you for your kind words. Let’s hope this doesn’t last.

I’m really sorry for your loss, Micheline. I gathered you too were close and how hard it must’ve been to you. Please take solace with the fact that his life will be remembered and praised as a most positive one to everyone he met or who got toc know him through you. Wesley, He is no longer suffering, which is a blessing, and because he seemed to be dying, my sister-in-law and my niece spent the night with him. The hospital provided little beds. He died surrounded by his family. We’ve suffered a loss, but he lives on in his children and grandchildren, and in our thoughts. The message he left is clear: be good, understanding, compassionate and serve your community! I’m pleased we had a chance to hug him and leave a final message of love. Now, life goes on… My brother’s son, François, will be looking after me until I fly away. He is doing what his father asked him to do. All’s well. Thank you for being with me and with my brother.
