‘This horror was based on intolerance’: Quebec premier, Muslims denounce deadly mosque attack
There were vigils on the evening of 30 January 2017 and both the Ottawa and Quebec Parliament’s flag were flying at half-mast. The current outpouring of sympathy towards the Muslim community will not take the victims back to their family and Muslims are afraid, but I hope it will be of some comfort. Quebec Premier Couillard has made it very clear that Canadians had been killed and wounded. I have yet to hear how Canada plans to protect its Muslim citizens, but I presume police surveillance will be increased. The shootings are particularly egregious since they occurred while Muslims were worshiping. This tragedy has hurt Canadians profoundly, from coast to coast, and especially Quebec Canadians where interculturalism has been adopted.
It’s a Canadian tragedy reflecting the shift to the Right affecting various countries.

President Trump’s Visit to Canada
United States President Donald J. Trump is scheduled to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this week. Yesterday, 30 January 2017, President Trump “cracked down on immigration and travel.”
Despite the might of American President Trump, I believe that protection of Canada’s identity, values and environment will be foremost in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s mind. Canadian Prime Ministers must respect and love their American counterparts, they need not please them. Our border both joins and separates us. (See Canada-United States Border, Wikipedia.)
Allow me to quote Trudeau père (see Pierre E. Trudeau, Wikipedia):
A man who tries to please all men by weakening his position or compromising his beliefs, in the end has neither position nor beliefs.
I feel very sorry for the family of victims and offer sincere condolences.
Love to everyone ♥

And yet, this man will never be called a terrorist by the media. Why is he not called a Christian terrorist? It is scary to be in America right now.

The shooter has been called a terrorist, at least in Canada. The population is terrorized. It’s so sad. Take care. Micheline

Agreed. Terrorists who claim to be Muslims are immediately branded with their identity and Muslims across the globe suffer because of it. Now, when a Christian has attacked a mosque, the world will have a dozen excuses about why he did it.

By preventing Muslims from entering the United States, Mr Trump threatens Muslims. He is spreading fear of Muslims and endangering their life. It is highly irresponsible. The young man who took the life of 6 Muslims worshipping and wounded 5, all of them fathers, was influenced by President Trump. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police has determined that he was not a member of an Islamic terrorist organisation. Alexandre Bissonnette was a French Canadian student and, probably, a Christian. In such cases, the police intensifies surveillance, but Canadian Muslims are now afraid. Freedom from fear is a human right. It is very sad. The Quebec City shooting was case number One, but case number 1 invites Case number 2. Love, Micheline

Trump’s rule is going to make the USA’s image even worse:( . Rumour has it that he might even start the world war 3.

Yes, rumour has it that he will start World War III, which we do not want. Our leaders should protect us and not lead us into war. Wars end, but only after making millions of victims. So why start a war? Donald Trump is a very sick man and the United States’ image is changing radically. Take care. Micheline

In Canada, it’s awful and in Quebec, totally unbelievable. Quebec is welcoming Muslims but we are very near Washington. Everyone is mourning, except “rebels without a cause” who have found a cause. President Trump is travelling to Canada. It scares me. He is preaching Islamophobia and he is President of the most powerful country. Canada has to resist him and his administration. These victims were fine and respected citizens. Their poor families. We will look after them, but we cannot bring back these fathers. All had children. Thank you for writing Fariba. 😦

A very sad event, and a stark reminder that attacks are as likely (or even more likely) to come from insiders than those who are so called foreigners.

Yes, attacks may come from insiders. Since the migrant crisis, too many people have turned to the extreme right. These victims were Quebecers practicing their faith, which is their right. We will need to reinforce protection for Muslims and Mexicans now that President Trump has cracked down on immigration and travel. There are several Mosques in Quebec City as well as other facilities, such as the Islamic Cultural Center, where the shootings took place. These victims were fine citizen, employed, and all had children. Imagine how guilty the family of Alexandre Bissonnette must feel. There are vigils everywhere in the province, flowers, help for the grieving families. We must now look after them. Islamophobia is spreading. Thank you for writing Gallivanta.

So so sad. But I cannot help but wonder whether such out pourings of grief is exhibited at the gunning down of Christians by Moslems. Of course I condone all acts of terrorism, respective of who perpetuates it.

No one came to the rescue of the Armenians who were attacked by Muslims. Moreover too little has been said of the persecution of the Syriac and Assyrian populations of the Near and Middle East. These populations were the first Christians. So you are absolutely right. Regards Celestina, Micheline

There is so much hypocrisy. As for the people, it could be that they did vote for Donald Trump. It’s called populism. I have amended my post.

I replied to your comment but my reply isn’t where it should be. It seems the people voted for Donald Trump who said that he would not allow Muslims to enter the United States. Power is in the hands of the people, but not necessarily the people who do not think. Best.
